Dung was born in Hanoi in 1959. He graduated from Hanoi College of Industrial Fine Arts in 1984. From 1989 until 1992 he was an official painter at the Vietnam Stamp Company, where he could exercise his talent for colour and precision. Working now as an independent artist, he has taken part in several exhibitions in Vietnam, including solo exhibitions in Ho Chi Minh City in 2004 and 2005. His delicate sense of light and shadow makes him one of the few modern exponents of the traditional Vermeer/Ingres spiritual movement. His works can now be found in many private collections in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Contemporary Asian Art artists

All the artists presented by Contemporary Asian Art have something unique to offer. Often non-Western artists are pigeon-holed as traditional or ‘naïve’, using ago old techniques that are quaint, but have hardly evolved artistically. Some traditional regional art is therefore decorative, but lacks depth, subtlety and artistic sophistication. Vietnam's French legacy however, combined with local techniques, has created a uniquely productive environment, that fuses the traditional with the modern and the Asian with the European.

As can be found in the selection of artists and works, there is a wide range of styles and techniques in modern Vietnamese painting. Some artists remain traditional craftsmen dealing with familiar subjects, although depicted with an extraordinary technical precision. Others show evidence of impressionist or expressionist inspiration. In each case the art is accessible to Western tastes and traditions, while remaining anchored in the East. This is the key to the magic and inspiration of the best of modern Vietnamese art.

Doan was born in Hanoi in 1937. He graduated from the "Ecole des Beaux Arts de Hanoi" in 1961. Doan then spent the next thirty years of his life teaching at various art institutes. But it was not until the 1990's that the artistic revival in Vietnam finally propelled him to the forefront of the milieu. He is now the leader of the new generation that has taken to more creative and vivid forms and colours. While he has become the undisputed master of lacquer works, he has been able to harness his skills to a deep creativity and sensitivity, which can also be felt in his strong and brilliant oil paintings. His works can be found in many private collections in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Mai, Trung Thu 1906-1980

Trung Thu Mai was born in Kien An, Vietnam. He was among the first class at the Ecole des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine. He studied under Victor Tardieu with fellow Vietnamese painters Pho Le and Vu Cao Dam. He went on to teach at the Hue before heading to Paris to work. His work was exhibited at the International Exhibition in France in 1937. Trung Thu Mai was also a member of the Salon des Independants and the Salon d’Automne, Paris. Eventually, he moved to Macon, France where he continued to work. His paintings can be found decorating one of the chapels of the church of St. Pierre, there. In 1942 the governor of Algeria invited him to exhibit at the Galerie Ramanes, Algiers.

Bui, Xuan Phai 1920-1988

Born in Ha Dong, Xuan Phai Bui spent the majority of his life in Vietnam, rarely traveling. He studied at the Fine Arts College of Indochina. As a result of his participation in Anti-French resistance movements, and the avant-garde style he painted in, Bui was not able to exhibit his works until 1984. His work was not appreciated during his lifetime but has gained recognition in recent years. Xuan Phai Bui has become a well-recognized Vietnamese artist and collectors are increasingly seeking his work. His works can be found in the collection of the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam.

Vietnamese contemporary art began a mere 75 years ago with a group of artists who were trained at the Indochina School of Fine Arts (Ecole des Baux Arts de l'Indochine) of Ha Noi. During the twenty years of its existence, French Instructors trained 128 artists to apply western techniques to traditional Vietnamese painting. Artists such as Bui Xuan Phai, Le Pho, and Mai Trung painted in a style that was highly influenced by Impressionism, Realism and Cubism. They portrayed the beauty of their native life and landscape through the lens of Western modernism. The subjects they depicted were romanticized and their works were infused with an ambiance of innocence and dream.

The Indochina School of Fine Arts closed its doors in 1945 when Viet Nam gained independence from France and reopened in 1946 as the Hanoi College of Fine Arts. Popular artistic trends in Western art, such as nude, abstraction and surrealism were banned or discouraged from view during this strict Socialist period in Vietnam, because they were seen as products of Western capitalism. Much of the art produced was instead, propagandistic in nature and centered on the theme of the worker-peasant-soldier in the context of socialist realism. In the early 1980's, the country began to move away from this 'nationalized' position for a broader, more liberal and individualistic approach to creative arts. The artists on this website represent the unique development that modern art in Vietnam has gone through.

Pho Le 1907-2001

Born in Vietnam, Pho Le was in the first class to graduate from the Ecole des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine, founded by Victor Tardieu. It was there he met Vu Cao Dam and Trung Thu Mai. He would later become Tardieu’s assistant.
Following his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, Pho continued to travel across Europe. He went to Belgium, Holland and Italy. He taught at the Indochina Fine Arts School in the 1930’s. He traveled through China, learning classical Chinese painting techniques. He received a commission from the Imperial Palace of Hue. In 1937 Pho went to Paris to serve as the artistic director of the Indonesian section of the International Exhibition that year. He stayed and continued to work in Paris for the remainder of his life.

Born in Medan, Indonesia, Rusli studied extensively at Santiniketan University in India. His academic interests included painting, philosophy and literature. From 1954 to 1956 he lectured at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts, Yogyakarta. He has had exhibitions in The Hague, Rome and Amsterdam during his travels in Europe. In South East Asia he has enjoyed exhibitions in Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung.

Born on 1931 in Surakarta, Srihadi Sudarsono studied at the Bandung Institute of Technology before going on to Ohio State University to earn his masters degree. While in the United States he was impressed with and influenced by the Abstract Expressionists. Following his return to Indonesia his work has become less abstract and more representational with time. He taught at the Bandung Institute of Technology and became the art department chairman in 1970. Srihadi Sudarsono also became chair of the art department of the Jakarta Institute of the Arts in 1973. His many honors include the Fulbright-Hays Grant (1979), the silver medal at the Seoul International Art Competition (1985), the Japan Foundation Cultural Grant (1990), and Cultural Awards for his paintings from the Indonesian (1971) and Australian (1973) governments.

Le Mayeur de Merprẻs, Adrien-Jean1880-1958

Born in Brussels, a member of the Belgian royal family, Adrien-Jean le Mayeur de Merpres arrived in Bali via Tahiti and French Polynesia in 1932.
He was influenced by the work of Gauguin and inspired to travel to Tahiti as he had. Finding Tahiti lacking, le Mayeur de Merpres eventually landed in Klandis, near Denpasar in Bali, where he would stay for the remainder of his life. He married noted Balinese dancer Ni Pollok, who became his favorite model.
He also enjoyed painting the daily lives of Balinese men and women. His eccentric lifestyle lured tourists traveling in Bali throughout the 1930s. He donated his house along with many of his works to the Indonesian government for a museum. It is now the Le Mayeur Museum.

Hendra Gunawan 1918-1983 Indonesian painter / artist

Born in Bandung, Hendra Gunawan studied under the artist Wahdi before he turned to modern art. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta from 1950 to 1957. He was imprisoned for 13 years because of his political beliefs. A year after his release he held a solo exhibition at the Art Center in Denpasar, Bali.

Affandi is one of Indonesia’s most well known painters. He was one of the founding members of PERSAGI, an association of Indonesian artists. He also founded two arts organization in the late 1940’s: “Community Artists” and “People’s Artists.” In the 1950’s he traveled across India on a grant from the Indian government. He held a number of one-man exhibitions there, and in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands, where he continued his travels. Although he was self-taught, upon his return to Indonesia in 1955 he began to teach painting at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts in Yogyakarta.
Affandi later traveled to Honolulu to participate in the first East-West Centre Artist-in-Residence program. He has received awards for his work, including an Indonesian Art Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 1969 and an Indonesian Government Gold Medal in 1978.

Affandi (1907-1990; Cirebon, West Java) was a self-taught artist. From 1951-1956 he travelled and held exhibition throughout India, the United Kingdom, Holland Belgium, France, and Italy, later he taught painting sculpture at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI, Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts) in Yogyakarta, Central Java.

In 1973 The Museum Affandi was established on the grounds of his residence in Yogyakarta. Affandi's highly expressionistic and dynamic works have very thick applications of paint squeezed directly from the tube with color fields smeared by hand.

Awards Affandi received : Piagam Anugerah Seni (Indonesia, 1969), honorary doctorate (University of Singapore, 1974), Dag Hammarskjoeld, International Peace Prize (Florence, Italy, 1997), Bintang Jasa Utama (Indonesia, 1978). ADRIANUS WILHELMUS SMIT, better known as Arie Smith was born in Zaandam, Holland in 1916. Moved and resided in Bali from 1956. Fall in love with Balinese culture ever since.

He formed artists community in Pengosekan village near Ubud known as 'Young Artist'.
His paintings have simple or naive forms. This style probably influenced the Young Artist members. The "Young artist" style now popular in Balinese painting was introduced by the Dutch painter Arie Smith. As other foreign painters also inspired Balinese artists to adopt western techniques but traditional Balinese paintings are still made. But Arie Smith influenced was dominant.
Their paintings are often naive but strong in colors. They used unusual color for the objects, such as red for the sea, blue for the skin, yellow for the sky, etc.

His works displayed at ARMA museum of art, Neka Museum in Ubud, Bali and Penang Museum, Malaysia.

Arie smith studied graphic design at the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam. Smith was sent to the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia official name before independence) for military service in 1938. He worked as a lithographer for the Dutch army's Topographical Service in Batavia (Jakarta) and made maps of the archipelago.

In early 1942, Smit was captured by invading Japanese forces at the start of World War II in Asia and the Pacific. Sent to Japanese forced labor camps for more than 3 years as a prisoner of war and built roads, bridges, and railways in Singapore, Thailand, and Burma.

After the war ended in 1945, Smit was released and returned to the new Republic of Indonesia. He became an Indonesian citizen in 1951. He taught graphics and lithography at the Institute Teknology Bandung (Bandung Institute of Technology) in West Java, and pursued his own artistic interests during this time.

Smit first visited Bali in 1956, and after two months he decided to make this island his permanent home.
He has lived in dozens of different villages across the island over the decades. In the early 1960s Smit gave art supplies to teenage youths in Penestanan village near Ubud in Gianyar, south Bali. With minimal instruction but lots of encouragement, they created a naive style of genre painting that became known as the "Young Artists" Style. Except for the imaginative use of color, their works differ in style and content from Smit's own paintings.
In recognition for his role in the development of painting on the island, Smit received the Dharma Kusuma award in 1992 from the government of Bali. The Arie Smit Pavilion was opened at the Neka Art Museum in 1994 to display his works and those of contemporary Balinese artists.

A very creative and productive artist, Smit often experiments with his style to show refreshing new views of familiar scenes. His works evoke the light and colors of late 19th century Impressionism, but he never paints on location. He sketches outdoors and then creates works back in his studio.

Elements of early 20th century Fauvism also appear in his works, but his style are features which he developed while living and working in Bali. Smit is a master of color and composition. Repeated elements, often simplified to their very essence but still recognizable, create visual rhythms.
His vibrant paintings focus on the people and places of Bali with his own special "broken colors" technique to show the beauty and deeper rhythms of life.

Of the various art forms popular throughout Indonesia, and particularly in Bali, painting is the one most influenced by both western ideas and demand. Yet until the start of this century, the portrayal of Hindu epics was the dominating form.

Generally, artists were not afforded room for personal expression, as their designs followed strict aesthetic and religions guidelines. However, this trend began to change at the beginning of the 20th century with the arrival of European painters, as artists formed unique and hybridized styles.

The use of Asian symbols in the works of, amongst others, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissaro, created interest and fascination with Asian-influenced art.
European painters traveled to Bali to experience the culture first-hand, and some never returned.

Ubud’s international fame as Bali’s preeminent city for art can be traced and accredited to the arrival of German painter Walter Spies, and Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet.
Together, with Indonesian artist Gede Agung Sukawati, the last “king” of Ubud, they established the Pitamaha Group. This institution was formed to legitimize and institutionalize Indonesian art while encouraging Balinese artists to both grow and diverge from traditional painting. The development of diverse and individualized styles can be seen in works of the varied artists displayed on this site.

I love his appreciation and approach of Indonesian village life, remind me of days gone by where life is simple, no rush away from the hustle and bustle of hectic modern life.

I am neither a collector having lots of money to spend on expensive painting nor an artist, just being a fan of fine arts, simply just because paintings give me so much joy I love to watch them over and over again. Painting means so much to me, so whenever I browse the internet and found a painting, I downloaded it and collect them on hard disk in digital form.
